Book covers are almost always designed by the publishers and the authors have very little say in the matter. This is probably a Good Thing, because writers aren't necessarily experts at marketing.

However, now and then enlightened publishers will ask an author if he or she has any ideas as to how the cover of their next book might look.

And sometimes the author has such a strong idea for the cover that he or she (or me) will produce one without prompting just to see what the publishing people make of it...

That's what I decided to do for the third New Heroes book, Absolute Power. I had what I considered to be a great idea, but I was concerned that - striking as the image was - it contains a very large spoiler for the book.

I don't like spoilers so I dithered back and forth as to whether I should create the cover, and eventually decided to do it anyway. The good folks at HarperCollins liked the image, but agreed that it was too much of a spoiler, so we decided to go for a more abstract cover.
