A note from Michael Carroll:

Way back in 1988 I decided that there weren't enough Alphaville fanzines in the world. Ably assisted by Emlyn Kavanagh, I produced the first issue of The Golden Path, a badly photocopied and generally amateurish fanzine, which I posted out (free, I might add) to the twenty or so Alphaville pen pals I'd picked up over the previous year.

The Golden Path folded a year later, after four issues, mainly due to lack of time. Working on the magazine wasn't so time-consuming: it was writing to what was by then over seventy-five pen pals that was killing me. Plus, it was costing me a fortune.

When I finally got my own internet account in the mid-nineties, I was impressed with the proliferation of FAQs based on many diverse subjects, and decided to produce one for Alphaville. (A note for people reasonably new to the Web: FAQs were simple text documents that contained lists of Frequently-Asked Questions - hence the acronym - about a particular subject).

The first version of the Alphaville FAQ appeared on 19th July 1995, and was e-mailed to various friends I'd met on the fledgling Alphaville mailing list. Shortly thereafter, I began to regularly post the FAQ to the list itself.

Then I decided to create a web site for the FAQ, which has gradually transformed into Cosmic Meadows - The Alphaville Encyclopaedia. Four years old today. Man, that's a long time. The site has changed quite a bit since the early days... Here's a copy of the earliest archived version:

-----------------------
1. Who are Alphaville?

Alphaville are a German rock group, specialising in either mysterious,
lyrical ballads or heavy electronic rock, depending on your point of view.
They are not widely known outside of Europe, though their first single,
"Big in Japan", was a major international hit in 1984. Their third single,
"Forever Young", is also well-known.

Alphaville's releases have been few, with a total of four albums by the
group and one solo album by Marian Gold, the group's vocalist. In addition,
there are three compilation albums (one of which was only released in the US,
another was only released in East Germany), and one limited release album.

Despite the dearth of material, Alphaville fans have a tendency to be
extremely dedicated about the group.

Band Members:

Marian Gold
Real name Hartwig Schierbaum
Lyrics, vocals
Born Herford, 26 May 1958
Released first solo album So Long Celeste in 1992.

Bernhard Lloyd
Real name Bernhard G”ssling

Born Cologne, 6 August 1960
Joined Alphaville in December 1985
Previously played with Marian Gold in Chinchilla Green

(ex-member) Frank Mertens
Keyboards
Born Enger, 26 October 1961
Left Alphaville in December 1985
Formed The Lonely Boys with Matine and Felix Lille

[This section is still in development]

------------------------------------
2. How and when did the group form?

Alphaville officially formed at the end of 1982, under the name Forever
Young, though their first release wasn't until early 1984.

In December 1985, Frank Mertens left the group, and was replaced by Ricky
Echolette, whom Marian knew from their band Chinchilla Green.

3. What awards have Alphaville won?

[This section is still in development]

--------------------------------------------------
4. Have Alphaville ever played live? Is so, when?

Until recently, Alphaville have only played at benefit concerts, and then
usually only one or two songs. The History album features "Big in Japan" and
"Islands" recorded at the Tempodrome in Berlin.

On 8th July 1995, however, Alphaville played their first full-length concert.
Marian Gold appeared with a full band: Ricky and Bernhard were nowhere to be
seen (apparently they dislike playing live). The track listing (supplied to
the AV Mailing list by Snoopy Schmitz) is as follows:

0 - intro (with hints of 'Fools')
1 - Fools
2 - A Victory of Love
3 - Ascension Day
4 - One Step Behind You (from Marian's 1992 solo LP So Long Celeste)
5 - Euphoria
6 - I'm On My Knees (? this was a brand new song from Marian's forthcoming
solo LP. I'm not sure that's the title. It was an awesome ballad style
song)
7 - Romeos
8 - Heart of the Flower (from 'So Long Celeste')
9 - Faith (with a Bob Marley "everything's gonna be all right" chant thrown
in for good measure.)
10 - Sounds Like a Melody (reggae version... brilliant! brilliant!)
11 - Fallen Angel (pop/rock version)
12 - And I Wonder (from 'So Long Celeste')
13 - Forever Young

Encore - Big in Japan

Thanks to Rui Camarinha for this info, which appeared on the Alphaville
mailing list.

Concert dates (Apart from Beirut, all are in former East Germany):

08/07/95 Leipzig
22/07/95 Goerlitz
04/08/95 Beirut, Lebanon
19/08/95 Schwedt-Kulturhaus
02/09/95 Burg
09/09/95 Haldensleben
02/10/95 Strehla

----------------------------------------------------------
5. What are these "hidden" messages I keep hearing about?

The Forever Young album credits have a line that reads "comfort by Wolfgang
Neuhaus." It wasn't known at that time that Wolfgang - or Ricky Echolette as
he is more commonly known - would later become a member of the group.

On the LP of Afternoons in Utopia, the words "Do What You Will" are engraved
in the dead space between the label and the tracks.

The "Big in Japan" culture mix has a weird, warbling voice at the start of
the song (just before someone with an American accent says "we're really
excited about this new song.") The sentence seems to end with the word
"stereo", but this is just some clever mixing. If you record the sentence and
play it backwards, it quite clearly says "Remix by Kid and Johnny."

The lyrics of Alphaville's most recent album, Prostitute, are hand-written on
the CD inlay. In places the handwriting is rather crude (deliberately), and
some letters seem to have been either done in a different hand, or heavily
emphasised. Putting these letters together forms words or sentences:
Ascension Day - son of a bitch
Ain't It Strange - prostitute - woman who offers her body
All in the Golden Afternoon - indiscriminate sexual intercourse
Oh Patti - intercourse especially
Ivory Tower - for hire
Iron John - for base gain
Euphoria - one's honour

------------------------------------------------------------------
6. I've heard the name Alphaville somewhere else... Where was it?

The 1965 movie "Alphaville", written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard,
starring Eddie Constantine and Anna Karina. The screenplay's original title
was "Tarzan versus IBM", but this was changed during production. This is the
movie from which Alphaville took their name.

The 1993 movie Hard Target (directed by John Woo, starring Jean Claude Van
Damme), was credited as being an Alphaville/Renaissance production. It is
believed that there is no connection with the group.

2000 A.D. Sci-Fi Special, 1979. In "Strontium Dog", Johnny Alpha is a mutant
bounty hunter. In this story Alpha saves a small town from a band of raiders.
In his honour, the citizens name the town "Alphaville"

Alphaville's song "Golden Feeling" appeared in the movie "Der Bulle und Das
Madchen" ("The Cop and the Girl"). The name of the group was quite prominent
on the video cassette cover.

-----------------------------------------
7. Are there any books about Alphaville?

Not really, but Warner have published music book versions of Forever Young
and Afternoons in Utopia:

Forever Young (1985, no ISBN given, reference number 20403). Features a
short (one-page) article on Alphaville, written in June 1984 (before the
album was released), and several rare monochrome photos.

Afternoons in Utopia (1987, ISBN 0 86359 443 3, reference number 28868).
Features two longer articles in German, as well as several full-page photos
(two in colour) and a free poster (A3 size, same as one of the internal
monochrome photos).

Warner Music published Big in Japan as a six-page music sheet (the first
page - the cover - being a monochrome photo of the group, the last page an
ad for other Warner sheet music). The reference number is VS4309.

Warner also published Laura Brannigan's recording of Forever Young. Again,
this is a six-page sheet (the front cover is red with a large white "WB"
symbol). Reference number is VS4881. Alphaville are not mentioned, though
Gold, Lloyd and Mertens are credited as writers.

The English translation of the screenplay to Jean-Luc Godard's movie
Alphaville is published by Lorrimar (ISBN 0 85647 907 X). Note that the
translation is slightly different to the movie's English subtitles.

---------------------------------------------
8. Is there an official Alphaville fan-club?

Yes. The Moon Office can be contacted at Box 620349, 10793 Berlin. Membership
is DM 60 per annum in Germany, DM 70 elsewhere with a Eurocheque, or DM 84
without a Eurocheque, for which members receive four issues of MoonPaper (an
A4 printed fanzine, occasionally with colour, approximately 20-24 pages per
issue), and a special free gift. The first year's gift was a limited edition
Alphaville badge, second year's gift was the "History" tape, third year's is
a large colour Alphaville poster.

------------------------------------------------
9. Is there an Alphaville page on the Internet?

There are at least two...
Dan Tulovsky maintains a page at http://www.escape.com/~dant/av/
There is another page at http://access.digex.net:/~evatac/Alphaville.html

There is also an Alphaville mailing list, maintained by Steve Blackwell. You
can subscribe to the list by sending a message to listproc@tribble.uvsc.edu
with the words "subscribe utopia " in the message text.

According to Rui Camarinha, Alphaville's manager is working hard to get the
Moon Office onto the Internet.

-----------------------------------------------------
10. What other groups are associated with Alphaville?

The Other Ones
Recorded their first album (The Other Ones) at Alphaville's Lunapark
studios, and they shared the same management as Alphaville. Lead vocalist
Janey Klimek sang with Marian on "Lassie Come Home". Band member Andreas
Schwarz-Ruzczynski played on The Breathtaking Blue and So Long Celeste.
Their second album was called Learning to Walk. Several members of the band
appeared in the "Ariana" video on Songlines. It is believed that The Other
Ones have now disbanded.

Lonely Boys
Frank Mertens joined Lonely boys after quitting Alphaville. The band
released at least one single, "Hold Me", but other than that nothing is
known.

Chinchilla Green
Marian Gold and Ricky Echolette were members of Chinchilla Green before
Alphaville was formed. In 1988 there were rumours that Chinchilla Green
would reform (but without Marian and Ricky).

Albert & The Heart of Gold
Listed as "our favourite band" by Alphaville. Albert and the Heart of Gold
are credited as the lyricists of "Lady Bright - Faster than Light". They
also appeared alongside Alphaville at the Tempodrome in Berlin at an Aids
benefit concert.

Yello
Deiter Meier directed the Big in Japan video.

Holly Johnson
Formerly of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Johnson's first band was called Big
in Japan.

Die Goldenen Zitronen
Recorded "Forever Punk" with Marian Gold on backing vocals.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. What are the connections between various different Alphaville songs?

This is by no means a comprehensive list... And is certainly not meant to be
taken seriously...

Ashen Roses
Seeds: Ashen roses, growing darkness
Fantastic Dream: Ashen roses rain on the fields
Apollo: And I shall rise from the ashes, grow like a rose from the ruins
Iron John: After rising from the ashes, you'll become a mystery
The cover of Dance With Me features a gloved hand reaching out to crush a
burning rose.
Plus, of course, there is "Red Rose"

Cosmic Meadows
The Nelson Highrise Sector Two: Hey, what do we know? Re(a)leasing arrows
over cosmic meadows
Faith: Into eternity with me to cosmic meadows

Angels
A Victory of Love: She's really an angel
Fallen Angel: She said: A fallen angel takes it but she'll never let go
Universal Daddy: He sends his Universal Angels through the air
Red Rose: A Teenangel-Empress from Hollywood highs... with wonderful eyes
Summer Rain: Whoever breaks the seven seals and lets the angry angels free
Fools: Seven angels, the Scarlet Beast
The Impossible Dream: This new-found world that's so alive, Angel
Ivory Tower: Fallen angels, streetside romeos

Star Trek
On the cover of Afternoons in Utopia, Ricky Echolette is wearing a United
Federation of Planets t-shirt.

The b-side to "Universal Daddy" is "Next Generation." The single was
released in 1986, a year before Star Trek: The Next Generation (aka TNG)
debuted.

Afternoons in Utopia features a song called "The Voyager." The most recent
Star Trek series is Star Trek: Voyager.

The group took their name from the film "Alphaville," made in 1965 by
Jean-Luc Godard... Jean-Luc Picard is the Captain of the Enterprise in TNG.
The names are just too similar for this to be a coincidence.

In the original series (aka TOS) episode "Charlie X" the planet on which
Charlie Evans' nearest relatives lived was called "Alpha V"

The last song on Prostitute is "Apollo." Kirk and crew met the God Apollo
in "Who Mourns for Adonais?" (TOS)

The Breathtaking Blue features a song called "Ariana", also the name of the
girl with whom Wyatt Miller (Troi's betrothed) falls in love in "Haven"
(TNG).

In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Kirk, Spock and McCoy sing "Row, Row,
Row Your Boat." Alphaville's "Ain't it Strange" (from Prostitute) uses the
line "Life is but a dream."

In Star Trek: Voyager there is a character called Doc Zimmerman (played by
Robert Picardo). Alphaville's "Next Generation" has a line that reads "And
the Zimmermen grin their perjured grins saying: There's no risk at all"

Malcolm MacDowell plays Tolian Soran in the 1994 movie Star Trek:
Generations. MacDowell is best known for his starring role in Stanley
Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. With that in mind, it's interesting to note
that there are several publicity photos of Marian Gold with one eye heavily
mascara'd... Just like Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Which other artists have done cover versions of Alphaville songs?

Laura Brannigan recorded "Forever Young" on her album Laura Brannigan 2.

The "History" album features a Reggae cover of "Forever Young" by an unknown
Jamaican band. They have slightly changed some of the lyrics. For example,
"are you going to drop the bomb or not?" becomes "are you going to drop the
bomb on us?"

Forever Punk was recorded by Die Goldenen Zitronen. Marian Gold agreed to
sing with the group on what is essentially a parody of Forever Young. Any
further information on this would be greatly appreciated.

------------------------
13. Who is Klaus Schulze?

He is a former member of Tangerine Dream, who produced The Breathtaking Blue
for Alphaville. According to legend, Schulze arrived at Alphaville's Lunapark
for two weeks and ended up staying for a year.

He has released several solo albums, and some in collaboration with Andreas
Gossler, most notably Babel (1989), the cover of which features Pieter
Bruegel's painting of the Tower of Babel (which also appears as the
background to the cover of The Breathtaking Blue).

--------------------
14. What is ...? Rare and unusual tracks.

The Nelson Highrise
This is a trilogy of B-side songs that appeared on the singles of "Sounds
Like a Melody", "Dance With Me" and "Jerusalem"/"Sensations". The songs'
full titles are:

The Nelson Highrise Sector 1: The Elevator
The Nelson Highrise Sector 2: The Mirror / Airlines / The Other Side of U
The Nelson Highrise Sector 3: The Garage: Vingt Mille Lieus Sous Les Mers

For the uninitiated, "Vingt Mille Lieus Sous Les Mer" means "20000 Leagues
Under the Sea", the title of Jules Verne's best known novel. Marian Gold is
a big fan of Jules Verne.

The Jet Set / Jet Set
Frank Mertens left Alphaville shortly before The Jet Set was to be released
as a single. Consequently, the song was rewritten and rerecorded, and
appeared as a single without the leading "the". The lyrics have been
slightly changed.

Lady Bright - Faster than Light
Appearing at the very end of Afternoons in Utopia, "Lady Bright" is a
limerick. "There was a young lady named Bright/Whose speed was much faster
than light/She departed one day/In a relative way/And returned on the
previous..." The song fades out, and seems to remain unfinished. However,
at the beginning of the album, "International Aquarian Orchestra" (or
I.A.O.) actually begins with the word "night." The album's lyric sheet
reflects this.

Big Yellow Sun
Also known as "Concrete Soundtraxx for Imaginary Films: 1", this song
appeared on the B-side of the European release of "Red Rose". It was never
officially released in the US, though it appears on the History album.

Mysteries of Love / The Mysteries of Love
The leading "the" was dropped from single release. Unlike Jet Set, there is
no significant difference between the album and single versions.

Elegy
Both "Sirens" and "Legend" (on Marian's So Long Celeste album and his "And
I Wonder" single respectively) feature very similar music. Apparently, both
are excerpts from a larger work called "Elegy", co-written by Marian and
Janey Diamond. It is not known whether the full work will ever be
published.

Sag Mir, Wo Die Blumen Sind?
This translates as "Tell Me, Where are the Flowers?" Rio Reiser and Marian
Gold performed with the German Allstar-band at Anti-Waansinns-Festival,
1986. Any further info would be appreciated.

Nacht im Wind
"Naked in the Wind" - preformed by (among others) Marian Gold at Band Fr
Afrika. Date, location and other participants unknown. Any info?

--------------------------------------
15. What can we expect for the future?

Hopefully, the next album will be released in the spring of 1996. Though as
there was a delay of five and a half years between The Breathtaking Blue and
Prostitute, this date is open to change.

Marian Gold is currently working on his second solo album. Rui Camarinha, who
has heard tracks from the album, says that the working title is "Feathers and
Tar".

According to Rui Camarinha, Alphaville's manager is "actively pursuing an
interactive CD-ROM for AV. On Friday morning I went with him to a meeting
with a big manufacturer and designing company of CD-ROMs and on-line work. It
was a two hour meeting and they showed us some of their work. They did a
CD-ROM for an artist called Sidney Youngblood and Sparks! And both were
really well done. He is still meeting with other companies to further
research the idea and have it come to life! He is determined to make it
happen sooner than later. So we all have that to look forward to..." (from an
e-mail dated Monday 10 July 1995)

--------------------------------------------------------
16. What albums/singles/videos have Alphaville released?

Albums

Forever Young (September 1984)
Alphaville's first album. LP and MC released with two different covers.
The first featured a monochrome photo of a crude stone face, the second

vertically, just to the right of Ricky. The US version had the title
running horizontally across the top.

The CD was one of the first ever released in CD+G format... With the
right hardware, it is possible to listen to the music while watching
pictures form on a TV screen. According to the CD's (stuck-on) label, it
is also possible to have the lyrics appear as subtitles in various
different languages. [I've seen the pictures, but never the lyrics. Can

Alphaville's official greatest-hits collection. The inlay quite
prominently features Frank Mertens, who had long since left the band,
alongside Ricky, Bernhard and Marian. The cassette version omits
"Sensations", "Red Rose" and "Big in Japan (culture mix)" (this last was
released as a single to coincide with the release of the album).

Released only on cassette, and only to members of the official fan club,
History is a collection of early Alphaville demo tracks, some b-sides, a
few out-takes, two live tracks ("Big in Japan" and "Islands") and a
Reggae cover of "Forever Young" by a Jamaican band (name unknown). "Leben
Ohne Ende" is a version of "Seeds" with German lyrics.

Prostitute (October 1994)
In a similar vein to "Middle of the Riddle", which is partially inspired
by Lewis Carroll's Alice books and The Hunting of the Snark, "All in the
Golden Afternoon" is taken verbatim from Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland (though two verses of Carroll's poem are missing).

"Ivory Tower" appears to be a song written specially for Alphaville fans:
it contains several references to previous songs, and - as pointed out by
Emma Troupe - it is the tenth song on the album, which was released on
tenth anniversary of the group's first album.

Singles
This is NOT a definitive list of AV's singles... There have been
variations (i.e., different mixes, different b-sides) on almost all of
them, and several relatively unimportant releases, such as the Atlantic
"Forever Young"/"Big in Japan" double-A single, and the WEA three-track
CD compilation. The purpose of this list is to highlight major releases
and the first appearances of the b-side singles.

Later versions of this FAQ will attempt to list ALL of Alphaville's
