The idea of getting a number of writers to produce stories on a set theme was discussed at a London SF convention, Kyril Bonfiglioli (editor of Science Fantasy/Impulse) being one of those taking part: the first stories in the series, on the theme of 'sacrifice', appeared in his magazine. The idea was expanded for this volume to include stories on the theme of 'redemption'.
